Why AI Agents Aren’t Ready to Manage Your Money: Insights from Eliza Labs’ Founder

During a recent interview at Token2049 in Singapore, Eliza Labs founder Shaw Walters expressed skepticism regarding the current readiness of AI agents to manage investment portfolios. He emphasized that while such agents can enhance the structuring of market data and expedite trade execution, they are not yet reliable enough to handle funds autonomously.

Walters stated, “You probably do not want to give an AI agent a bunch of money and expect it to make you more,” highlighting that today’s AI tools serve primarily as interfaces for quantitative analysis and data inflow from social media rather than as profit-seeking traders.

Eliza Labs, which covers AI development on the Solana blockchain, launched ElizaOS in January—a platform designed for the creation and management of AI-driven agents. Central to Eliza’s strategy is a “marketplace of trust,” which transforms unverified market signals into paper trades, allowing for better tracking and credibility scoring of market predictions. “We can identify who’s actually good at calling and who’s trying to scam,” he noted.

The company is also testing an automated over-the-counter (OTC) desk where users can negotiate token trades with automated bots governed by smart contracts, ensuring safety limits on transactions. Walters elaborated on their algorithm’s ability to proactively engage in sentiment analysis within social media environments, allowing agents to act swiftly based on relevant posts from key opinion leaders.

Additionally, Walters suggested that AI agents could help decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) navigate coordination challenges by summarizing interactions, identifying decisions, and automating community workflows.

Moreover, he criticized Elon Musk’s X Corp following a lawsuit alleging that the platform had misled them into disclosing technical details about their AI systems, only to subsequently ban the company and launch similar products. Walters underscored Eliza’s commitment to an open-source philosophy and a multi-chain approach in the development of its AI tools.
