A Coinbase executive possibly made an error in her statement regarding Vice President Kamala Harris accepting cryptocurrency donations.
During a presentation at a Citigroup event, Coinbase Chief Financial Officer Alesia Haas mentioned, “Harris is accepting donations.” She further elaborated that Harris was utilizing Coinbase Commerce for accepting cryptocurrency for her campaign, as initially reported by Fortune.
However, a correction was later provided by a Coinbase representative clarifying that Haas was actually referring to the Future Forward USA PAC, and not Harris’ campaign directly. “Coinbase can confirm that the Future Forward PAC has onboarded with Coinbase Commerce to accept crypto donations,” the spokesperson stated to CoinDesk.
Although the Harris campaign does not directly accept cryptocurrency, Future Forward USA PAC plays a significant role in supporting Harris. This move might indicate a potential openness among Democrats towards cryptocurrency. In contrast, Donald Trump, Harris’ rival in the presidential race, has already garnered substantial backing from the crypto community. The administration in which Harris serves has received considerable criticism from the cryptocurrency industry, which perceives it as having an anti-crypto stance.
Future Forward is a hybrid PAC, first used for President Joe Biden, that can contribute directly to the campaign or pay for independent advertising that’s not coordinated with Harris’ camp.
Harris’ campaign website does not currently offer ways to donate in crypto, and advocacy group Crypto4Harris told Fortune that it was not aware of the development.
