Senator’s Mixed Signals: Introducing a Bill to Halt Trump’s Crypto Activity After Supporting It Just Last Week

Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) recently proposed the Curbing Officials’ Income and Nondisclosure (COIN) Act, which aims to prohibit President Trump, Vice President, and their families from engaging in any cryptocurrency activities while in office. The proposed bill stipulates civil fines and potential prison time of up to five years for violations, citing significant ethical concerns surrounding Trump’s involvement in crypto.

Despite introducing this legislation, Schiff had previously voted for the GENIUS Act, which facilitates the trading and issuance of stablecoins and surprisingly omits provisions that would restrict presidential crypto ventures. While the GENIUS Act prevents Congress members and certain executive officials from issuing stablecoins, it does not extend these limitations to the president and vice president.

Schiff’s contradictory actions have drawn criticism. In the past days, many online have expressed skepticism over his strategy, questioning how he could draft legislation targeting Trump’s crypto enterprises after recently supporting a bill that allows such activities. Comments on social media have labeled his actions as cynical, with one user highlighting the inconsistency in Schiff’s position.

The backdrop to this legislative activity includes various proposed bills aimed at pressuring Trump to divest from his crypto interests. These include efforts by other Democrats like Sam Liccardo and Chris Murphy, but with Republicans controlling Congress, the potential for these bills to succeed is bleak.

As legal scrutiny into Trump’s crypto dealings continues, the absence of conflict-of-interest measures in recent legislation raises questions about future market regulations in the cryptocurrency sector. The ongoing inquiry into Trump’s enterprises by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations may play a significant role in shaping the regulatory framework surrounding digital assets.
